Memory Verses

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”  ~ Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;” ~ 2 Corinthians 3:5 (KJV)

All scripture references are taken from the King James Bible

Hymn

“Our God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

Under the shadow of Thy throne
Thy saints have dwelt secure;
Sufficient is Thine arm alone,
And our defense is sure.”

– Isaac Watts (1674–1748), Our God, Our Help in Ages Past

All hymn texts are taken from Cyber Hymnal

Examples from Daily Life

“Wow, Philip, do you always use three pencils for your math lesson?” Robyn asked, as she saw her brother sharpening his final pencil.  “I think one would be sufficient for a month!”

“Actually, these are not for myself,” Philip explained. “But you said that sometimes the little ones are distracting when we work in the living room.  I’m going to let them each have a pencil, and play with my tracing book.  That should be sufficient to keep them busy!”

“Thank you, Philip,” their mother smiled.  “I appreciate your initiative.  And now I think I might have sufficient time to put a load of laundry in, before we get started.”

Bonus Activity

One of our memory verses, Matthew 6:34, makes an excellent motto for the beginning of the year.  Copy it out onto a large sheet of paper, using markers or coloured pencils to make it as decorative as possible.  Post this verse on your fridge, or in some other place where you will see it frequently.  See how many times you can use your motto this week.

Sample Answer to Last Week’s Bonus Activity

Student answers will vary.  Some suggestions might include:

  1. The presence of work – school; chores; gardening; lawn mowing; helping with meals; etc.
  2. The presence of waiting – healing from sickness; prayers that aren’t answered right away; etc.
  3. The presence of progress – learning new skills; growing closer to God; memorizing Scripture; practicing the Fruit of the Spirit; etc.
  4. The presence of praise – singing hymns; thanking God for blessings; giving glory to Him for the things He has done for us; etc.

Most children will probably come to the conclusion that Christians have experiences from all four categories in the course of a year.
