FREE Today: The Meaning of Resurrection

“How can I write about Easter when my heart is dead?” Lauriette believes in the meaning of resurrection—at least, she thought she did, until tragedy ripped her world apart. Is the deadness she feels now a proof that resurrection is a foolish dream? Or is it still possible to give Stasia what she asked for?The beginning of August! In Canada, it means a unique holiday—the long weekend without a name.

Okay, that’s a slightly dramatic overstatement.

Technically referred to as The Civic Holiday, the first Monday in August (and the consequent long weekend) appears under different names in different communities across the country, including Regatta Day, Terry Fox Day, Simcoe Day, New Brunswick Day, and even Benjamin Vaughan Day (courtesy of the City of Vaughn, Ontario).

If you’re a Canadian citizen and all of this is news to you—no worries! Most Canadians refer to it simply and succinctly as The August Long Weekend. This year it falls August 3-5—and in preparation (okay, let’s be honest, more like coincidence!) SAW Publishing is excited to be releasing another title in our short story collection.

The Meaning of Resurrection

by Chelsea Burden

“How can I write about Easter when my heart is dead?”

Lauriette believes in resurrection—at least, she thought she did, until tragedy ripped her world apart. Now, she isn’t sure if it’s possible to believe in anything when the yawning grave is the end of it all.

But she would do anything for Stasia, and Stasia wants the Easter poem she promised to write for the little magazine that nobody reads anyway. Nobody but Stasia.

Lauriette can’t disappoint her friend’s dying wish—but she can’t write about Easter, either. Faced with this impossible choice, a chance conversation with a sympathetic roommate turns Lauriette’s thinking on its head. Is the deadness she feels now a proof that resurrection is a foolish dream? Or is there another way to view the meaningless tragedy that is destroying her from the inside out?

And is it still possible to give Stasia what she asked for?

The Meaning of Resurrection was first published in October of 2021, as part of the King’s Daughters Story Collection Hope.

Hope was the third collection of short stories published by the King’s Daughters Writing Camp (KDWC). It was also the first book in the ongoing KDWC series My Theme in Glory.

If you are familiar with Chelsea’s Fellowship of Light novels, then you will especially enjoy The Meaning of Resurrection’s tie-in to the Maple Creek community.
