Webster’s 1828 Full Definition

PERPLEX’ED, participle passive

1. Made intricate; embarrassed; puzzled.

In order to give a fuller sense of the word, we have also included Webster’s definition of PERPLEX:

PERPLEX’ verb transitive.

[L. perplexus, perplexor; per and plector, to twist, from the root of Gr. πλεϰω, L. plico, to fold.]

1. To make intricate; to involve; to entangle; to make complicated and difficult to be understood or unraveled.

What was thought obscure, perplexed and too hard for our weak parts, will lie open to the understanding in a fair view.  Locke.

2. To embarrass; to puzzle; to distract; to tease with suspense, anxiety or ambiguity.

We can distinguish no general truths, or at least shall be apt to perplex the mind.  Locke.

We are perplexed, but not in despair.  2 Corinthians 4:8

3. To plague; to vex. Glanville.

Hymn

“O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed;
And free us from all ills, in this world and the next!”

– Martin Rinkart (1586-1649), translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878), Now Thank We All Our God

Examples From Daily Life

“I am rather perplexed about this cleaning solution,” said Mrs. Gravesend, after she had read the bottle carefully.  “I’m afraid it might damage the varnish on the table.”

“The question is, whether the table will look better with scribbles and with varnish, or with no scribbles but with no varnish either,” said Philip, looking up from the dictionary.

“That is a perplexing sentence!” Robyn laughed.  “It will look best of all with the scribbles off, and the varnish on.”

“Yes, but we are perplexed about how to get that result,” said Philip.  “I wonder, Mom, would bleach do it?”
